i would have never imagined that watching a williams vs williams final would convert me into a venus william's fan. not after her participation in the 2005 davenport tragedy.
but it's not just Venus' power game and how well suited she is for grass that's converted me... and i haven't forgotten both sisters' streakiness (though Serena's been more consistent). it's just that the Williams sisters? They're actually kinda funny during their press conferences and interviews. They are a bit sassy and never apologetic. They're monstrously built, but they know how to use that fierce edge against opponents... but what's really won me over, in the risk of sounding corny, is their sisterly comraderie.
playing to win history and prestige against the closest person in your life has GOT to be hard. even more so when you're not as young, not as naive... more mature, more aware of the stakes at hand. and then, after deciding which is more important, conceding to your older/younger sister or winning/defending the Championships: Wimbledon, watching your decision become realized in front of millions of viewers... going out to play in the DOUBLES final. TOGETHER.
geeeeeeeze.
that's what we call a mental trip. crazy. and impressive.
*quick observations of their games:
very similar games. power, power, and more power. huge serves in both. Serena has a bit more overall court game... a bit more subtlety and angles in her shots. venus has a bit more firepower in the serve because of her height, but she can scramble around like no other AND play the netgame. Serena's mind, though Williams-like = streaky, a bit more willful than her older sister's. Both, when pressed against a wall, bring out the best. oaf. nasty.
we're almost at the end of Wimbledon. :( BUT. i just saw a promo for the Olympic trials. um. SWIMMERS. AHHHHHH.
